Jessie Reyez is a Canadian born singer who I have had the pleasure to work with. She is incredible at drawing from her own pain in her creative works and is a daily inspiration of how a person’s intimate experiences can echo throughout their work. Jessie really took off once she created her song “Gate Keeper”, focused on her experience with sexual assault in the music industry. Her drive and positivity despite these setbacks is a major source of inspiration for me and I highly recommend giving her music a listen.
After reading Rick Rubin’s “The Creative Act: A Way of Being”, I started looking at my creative process differently. He has made waves in the music and literature industries by trusting his tastes and not being protective over his thoughts during creative collaboration. Working in such a collaborative and creative environment, I found his words both relatable and actionable to my world.
Abeolu is a photographer from Nigeria who’s black and white photography is rooted in the intersection of dreams and ideas. Following his work for years, I have found inspiration in his originality and vision. I constantly find myself returning to his work when in need of a reminder of how surrealism and photography can play together.
